DISTRICT OFFICE: Idaho's seven health districts work in close cooperation with the Department of Health and Welfare and numerous other state and local agencies. Each district has a board of health appointed by the county commissioners. The districts are not part of any state agency. Each district responds to local needs to provide an array of services that may vary from district to district. Services range from community health nursing and home health nursing to environmental health, dental hygiene and nutrition programs. Many services are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Contact the nearest District Health Department for the latest information about services in your community and for information. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) will work in partnership with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, the other public health districts, health care providers and emergency service responders to formulate a cohesive statewide plan to prepare for and respond to bioterrorism attacks and other public health emergencies.
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health programs include issues where human health interrelates with the physical environment and the community of plants and animals.
**Environmental Health Programs include: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.
**Land Development programs include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections).
FAMILY PLANNING: Provides Family Planning services, including education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical examinations (including cancer screening, sexually transmitted disease screening and HIV testing) and referrals. Most methods of birth control are offered. Educational materials and speakers are available for community presentations upon request.
IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations through clinics offered at the health department or occasionally at special off-site clinics. Routine childhood vaccinations are low cost or no cost if the parent is unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are offered by appointment. Please call the local health department to find out which specific vaccines are needed for each destination. Travelers receiving vaccines from the health department will need to pay for the vaccine. Adult vaccines such as tetanus and diptheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccine may also be available. The Immunization Registry (a free, voluntary, and confidential service) allows you, your family, and your Doctor will know when and for what you have been immunized and if you are current on your immunizations. It will also help insure you only get the vaccines you need when you need them.
WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is the supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children and provides: Healthy foods each month that can be purchased with WIC vouchers. Health screenings. Health and nutrition classes. Information about community programs and referrals to health care providers. Individual counseling with registered dietitians. Breastfeeding information and support. Recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves: Pregnant women; Breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum); Infants up to one year of age; and Children under five years of age.
WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor. Women's Health Check is a federally funded program that offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to women who qualify. The Women's Health Check is for women who: do not have health insurance that covers mammograms or pap test, meet income guidelines, and are one of the following: Age 50-64 or; Age 30-49 and have not had a pap test in 5 years or longer, or never had a pap test or; under age 50 with symptoms suspicious of breast cancer (must have a clinician complete approval form) or; age 65 or older and is NOT eligible for Medicare, or does not have Medicare part B.
