Breastfeeding Support & Equipment

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) is a program for income eligible infants, preschool children, pregnant, Breastfeeding and post partum women at nutritional or medical risk. The program goal is to improve the health of participants by providing nutrition education, Breastfeeding support, nutritious supplemental food and referral to health care services at no cost.

WIC is administered through the Division of Public Health, Bureau of Clinical and Preventive Services.

The Saint Alphonsus Family Center is a meeting place for all generations of women to come together for professional support and health resources. Through the direction of a collaborative team of physicians, nurses and specialists, the center partners with women and their families to improve wellness throughout their life. It is a place where families come together to grow.

Family Wellness Education Programs include:
CARE Maternal/Child Health Programs: A clinic and educational support program for pregnant refugee women and their families

**Childbirth classes (early pregnancy, childbirth, childbirth refresher); preconception and postpartum

**Breastfeeding classes/Lactation consulting - A certified lactation consultant assists new mothers in achieving successful breastfeeding. Services available include consultations/patient education and manages a comprehensive line of breastfeeding supplies, such as pump rentals, nursing pads, nursing bras, breastfeeding classes and breastfeeding support groups.

**Parenting - Signing Times, Parenting at Midnight, Pediatric Sleep Consultations, Taming the Toddler, "Happiest Baby on the Block," and Newborn Care and Parenting.

Support Groups - Breastfeeding Support and Encouragement, and Baby and Me (a support group for parents with children ages 0-12 months) and SHARE of Idaho (Miscarriage and Infant Loss)

**Massage Therapy Certified massage therapists on staff for women, men and children include Swedish massage, Pregnancy massage, Infant massage.

Women's Life is an extension of St. Luke's RMC. In a convenient and comfortable atmosphere, this program provides answers to health care problems. Materials available on several issues concerning women including pregnancy/parenting, STD's, preventative
education and more.

Neonatal Support Group 381-2661 - for parents of NICU babies during initial hospitalization and beyond. Support is provided by volunteer parents with similar experiences. Meetings are held weekly.

Parents Plus Support Group. 208-841-9199. Focuses on helping parents whose children have physical or mental disabilities, serious or chronic health conditions and developmental delays. Anderson Center, St. Luke's Hospital, 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. - second Friday of each month. No spanish available. No fees.

Parenting and/or Pregnancy Support Services:

Each district has a board of health appointed by the county commissioners. The districts are not part of any state agency. Each district responds to local needs to provide an array of services that may vary from district to district. Services range from community health nursing and home health nursing to environmental health, dental hygiene and nutrition programs. Many services are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) will work in partnership with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, the other public health districts, health care providers and emergency service responders to formulate a cohesive statewide plan to prepare for and respond to bioterrorism attacks and other public health emergencies.

ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health programs include issues where human health interrelates with the physical environment and the community of plants and animals.

IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations through clinics offered at the health department or occasionally at special off-site clinics. Routine childhood vaccinations are low cost or no cost if the parent is unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are offered by appointment. Please call the local health department to find out which specific vaccines are needed for each destination. Travelers receiving vaccines from the health department will need to pay for the vaccine. Adult vaccines such as tetanus and diptheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccine may also be available. The Immunization Registry (a free, voluntary, and confidential service) allows you, your family, and your Doctor will know when and for what you have been immunized and if you are current on your immunizations. It will also help insure you only get the vaccines you need when you need them.

The Early Childhood Information Clearinghouse (ECIC) holds information about children birth through age five and includes resources available for parents, caregivers, and early childhood professionals. We are a breastfeeding support group. Our services are free and Leaders are trained in the latest medical information regarding breastfeeding. We offer monthly meetings for women interested or currently breastfeeding. We encourage women to come before their baby is born. We have a free lending library and offer information sheets. Our meetings are based on Mother-to-Mother support (mothers helping each other) with the Leaders facilitating the discussion and offering current information. Some Leaders will also do home-visits for mothers experiencing breastfeeding difficulties.

Both are sold to neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) across the United States for critically ill premature babies who need more protein and calories than are naturally occurring in mother’s milk.

The Stink Bug Project, in partnership with the prison-trained K-9 Program at Colorado Correctional Industries, matches well-trained, loving companion dogs with families throughout the Rocky Mountain region.

Medela's primary focus is breastfeeding - by helping moms to successfully breastfeed their babies and to do so for as long as they choose. This includes production of breastfeeding equipment as well as training and educational materials.
